That happens to me also on Ubuntu Gnome 17.04. It's not random though but rather when the screen shuts off after I leave the computer inactive. When I turn the screen back on, it's 90 degrees clockwise (and quite puzzling to get the mouse working to be able to reboot because of muscle memory).
