** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg I had been having a Jaunty system freeze problem using the 173 NVIDIA binary driver, and I could generally only recover with Alt-SysReq REISUB. I couldn't access a console, because no consoles were available. That was not a problem until perhaps a month or two ago, and it seemed to get worse over time -- update problem? At its worst, it was freezing multiple times per day. Recently I switched back to the generic, open driver (actually, I tried to switch to Nouveau, but it failed and tossed me back to the generic driver, or so it said. Now it freezes less often -- perhaps every day or two. When it does freeze, I can access a virtual terminal. When running top, I've noticed that memory used is very large -- on the order of 3009700K -- essentially the entire 3GB my 32-bit OS can address. When I first observed that, Firefox 3.0.14 had ~8 zombie processes. I killed them and freed up perhaps 300MB. I could restart X, but it froze again, and this time I couldn't recover. At another freez, I killed FF first and then saw that xorg had all the memory (362m virt and 77m res, with 2770660K used overall. sudo kill (pid of xorg) restarts X, but then it goes back to the same memory usage immediately, even though I can get back into X. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does the same as kill (pid of xorg). I've seen lots of complaints about Jaunty freezing, but I've not seen anything about it freezing because xorg uses all available memory. $ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 9.04 Release: 9.04 $ apt-cache policy xorg xorg: Installed: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 Candidate: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 Version table: *** 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia Package: xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersion: Linux version 2.6.28-15-generic (bui...@palmer) (gcc version 4.3.3 (Ubuntu 4.3.3-5ubuntu4) ) #49-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 18 18:40:08 UTC 2009 SourcePackage: xorg Uname: Linux 2.6.28-15-generic i686 + + [lspci] + 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory Controller Hub [8086:2a00] (rev 0c) + Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:30cc] + 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GS [10de:0425] (rev a1) + Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:30cc]
