  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel
  
  Boots up, the ubuntu loading screen bar fills up, and when it should go
  to the login screen, the screen turns white and fades to black in
  patches.  Sometimes it flashes and starts again, and you can briefly see
  a cursor or spinning thing.  Often it won't let you open a terminal, and
  other times it will open a terminal, but the screen isn't set up and it
  flashes quickly and isn't lined up very well.  If you don't open a
  terminal, you can type your login credentials blindly and hear it
  continue booting.  I've tried 8.04, 9.04 and 9.10, all with the same or
  similar results.  Attached is the output of ubuntu-bug -p xserver-xorg-
  video-intel, I will follow up with Xorg.0.log, xorg.conf, dmesg,
  messages and lspci -vv.  Here is apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-
