That is the problem then. If the kernel can't get EDID data from your monitor then it has no idea what the supported resolutions are.
First, please try unplugging and re-plugging your monitor a few times. If that doesn't fix it then please also try a different monitor cable if you can. Second, if this is a software bug then we now know it is in the kernel.
