I have the same problem after install the 185 drivers in an up to date Karmic - boots into black screen. I am pretty sure this bug is back - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/nvidia-graphics- drivers-180/+bug/429003 - or something like it has been born.
I have nvidia 9400 and 8400 and both machines are screwed.
