This happens to me when I undock a Lenovo laptop (Intel graphics card)
and dock it again, in a docking station with two attached monitors.

Rebooting is not necessary; simply logging out works around the issue. I
assume that this is because the X.org server restarts.

Does anyone know if, as a workaround, I can achieve the effect of
resetting all the display configuration without restarting X or logging
out?
