The poor "choppy" graphics performance is expected because you are using
kernel parameter "nomodeset". That prevents all hardware acceleration
and smooth rendering from being used. The system is expected to use
LLVMpipe in that case and it is not a bug...

Please instead open a new bug about the "freezing" issue that
"nomodeset" is trying to avoid:

  1. Remove kernel parameter "nomodeset".
  2. Reboot and reproduce the "freezing".
  3. Report a new bug by running command:

     ubuntu-bug linux

     Ideally, without "nomodeset" if you can. Otherwise with it.
