$ Xephyr -ac -screen 800x600 -br -reset -terminate :1.0 & $ Then I could do $ export DISPLAY=:1.0 $ Then run a program in the nested Xserver (I used this to run xnview 1.7 linux in KDE4 due to unresolvable transparency issues). Now when I run $ Xephyr -ac -screen 800x600 -br -reset -terminate :1.0 & The following gets spit out in terminal and there is a hang and no return to a prompt: unrecognised device identifier!
