Public bug reported:

I have installed the nouveau driver as the latest nvidia driver was not
working in my system (blank screen after reboot). The X11 session is
starting up fine, but whenever I open the Ubuntu settings the X11
session is killed, the system goes back to the logon screen and all
processes are lost.

The following can be seen in the kern.log when this happens:
