Interesting, thanks! This looks like the first example of Xorg getting stuck on the same Intel kernel issues as we see with Wayland. Could you try adding a kernel parameter 'drm.debug=0xff' and reproduce it again? That should tell us exactly what the "Invalid argument" is.
