You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After updating my Karmic install with the latest packages as of 10/25, I
can no longer log in following reboot.

If I switch to a console using Ctrl+Alt+F1, I can log in and restart gdm
with 'sudo service gdm restart'. After this, I can successfully log in.

Examing .xsession-errors indicates "Fatal IO error 11 (Resource
temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0" for each one of the graphical
programs that should be started as part of session initialization.
