You have been subscribed to a public bug: After updating my Karmic install with the latest packages as of 10/25, I can no longer log in following reboot.
If I switch to a console using Ctrl+Alt+F1, I can log in and restart gdm with 'sudo service gdm restart'. After this, I can successfully log in.
