Public bug reported: I have a Dell XPS 9310 laptop, a Kensington Thunderbolt docking station, and an HP Z32 monitor. The dock is connected to the laptop with a Thunderbolt cable, and the monitor is connected to the dock with a DisplayPort cable and a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter plugged into one of the downstream USB-C/Thunderbolt ports.
Recently, I've started getting spurious (to me) authentication prompts every time I (un)plug the monitor. Observed behavior: Every time I plug my external monitor into my laptop, I get prompted for my password with "Authentication is required to create a color managed device". Every time I unplug it, I get prompted with "Authentication is required to remove a color managed device". Expected behavior: I do not need to enter my password when (un)plugging my monitor; any elevated privileges required are granted without my intervention. Other notes: I recently upgraded the firmware on the laptop, although Dell's changelog only listed a security fix. I read the FindRightPackage wiki page, but I didn't see anything specifically about color management, and I'm not sure which package(s) are responsible for it, so I'm filing this under xorg generally.
