I have a similar problem on my Dell D600 laptop when booting with the 2.6.31-14 kernel which was part of the upgrade to 9.10; basically I get one mouse-click & then the system freezes - ALt-CTRL-DEl doesn't work and I have to shut down by pulling the powerplug & removing the battery. if I boot with the previous kernel from jaunty - 2.6.28-16, this freeze does not occur; so that's what I am doing for now.
