These symptoms seem to describe the problem I'm seeing with a recent upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04, and then to 9.10 on my Toshiba Tecra A3. The Jaunty freezing was worse so I moved almost immediately to Karmic. Freezing seems random, though at least once a day. It can occur when clicking, or even just moving the mouse. Sometimes the cursor remains responsive to movement but not clicking. Network access is available so I've just tried restarting gdm with the debug=batch command. Will dump the next time I see a freeze as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze
