Ok, so I can't install the 173 drivers -- which would explain why jocky
only gives me the option of the 185 drivers...

But the 190 drivers from the ppa mentioned at: http://www.ubuntugeek.com
/howto-install-nvidia-190-25-beta-drivers-in-ubuntu-
jauntyintrepidhardy.html are giving me more joy -- I left my machine for
the day and came back to *no* graphics corruption (something new for my
Karmic system). So perhaps the problem isn't compiz -- *perhaps* the
problem is just simply badly QA'd proprietary drivers with no backup to
previously known good drivers (ie, the 180 series).
