I am having this same problem, which started with the xorg updates to Karmic I did on 12/1/09.
However, I am not running UNR. In my case it's a Toshiba Satellite 1100-S101 with Intel 830m graphics (Intel 82830 CGC). I'm running Karmic for i386. Once the screen blanks, keyboard and mouse can't bring X back.
