Some workaround is to change /etc/X11/xorg.conf to:
        Driver "vesa"
# Driver "intel"
(of course, that's only possible by booting an old version using a USB stick!)
and to append "nomodeset" to the kernel boot line in grub. AFAICS, both of
them are required.

Unfortunately, this means of course, that you'll end up with a blurry screen
and no accelerated graphics

Cheers,
Reinhold

After upgrade to karmic, Xorg will boot with display blank, and no reaction to
keypresses (e.g. Alt+Ctrl+1 shows no reaction)
