Ok i was about to give up on this. I also had the same problem, however
i had also changed my laptops and never thought it just being a karmic
problem. And just when i was about to give up i read your bug report.
And yuppie i found a solution.

Not elegant but it works.

Here it comes.

Disable kernel modesetting ......

Thats it ... the driver behaves just like the old one and all is well
again. There are plenty of instructions on google to do this, one way i
used is to append nomodeset to kernel command line.
