I have been able to solve the problem by using FreeNX server (karmic) from the PPA https://launchpad.net/~freenx-team/+archive/ppa.
It appears that the reported bug has everything to with VNC not being able to display KDE4 widgets correctly, regardless of the vnc server (tightvnc, vnc4server). Fortunately the FreeNX installation is a breeze compared to my vnc setup (which used xinet), and a lot snappier across my ADSL vpn. The above bug should be closed or moved to VNC.
