I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a person his pc (dual boot with Windows) where it also had random crashes/freezes. When I switched off "visual effects" it seemed better, but I only had less crashes on that system. It was not that the problem was solved. This looks like a (very) severe bug to me, as it freezes the whole system.
