Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg
I am very much a newbie and most of the information below is information I gathered when experienced people at ubuntuforums.org asked me to perform these steps (in other words, I do not know much about "randr" or the other steps so if you need more info, I'll be happy to try to get it but please don't assume I understood what exactly I did in those steps) 1 MONITOR: My monitor, purchased at the beginning of 2007 at Best Buy is an Insignia 15" LCD TV that again, worked perfectly for Ubuntu 6. Specifications since I have the manual for the Insignia in front of me: Display type: "Color TFT LCD" pixel type "RGB stripe" Active screen size "15 inches diagonall" Maximum resolution "1024x768" 2. When I had the Dapper Drake ubuntu installed by a friend on my machine, Ubuntu/X understood my monitor's resolution without any problem 3. When I upgraded from version 6.X to 8.04 in summer 2008, the resolution would only work up to 800x600. When I purchased a Live CD with ubuntu 9.1 for the entire drive to 'start everything from scratch' I thought it would fix these issues but again, it could not understand the monitor (not only an inconvenience but it also meant some software I could not run since the dialog boxes' buttons were outside the window's area that was visible/clickable) The rest of the information below is based on suggestions from people at ubuntuforums.org who put a lot of effort, much appreciated, into helping resolve this but ultimately did not find a solution..hopefully this information however will help for this bug report. - - -rest of information (now under my 9.10 system still having monitor resolution problems) ** typing xrandr results in: Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600 default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm 800x600 60.0* 56.0 640x480 60.0 ** A copy of the Xorg.0.log file is here: http://barzilai.org/ubuntu/Xorg.0.log ** lastly, the long output in response to "sudo apt-get install read- edid" which was also suggested to me to try, is copy/pasted below: ha...@harel-desktop:~$ sudo get-edid|parse-edid > edid.txt parse-edid: parse-edid version 2.0.0 get-edid: get-edid version 2.0.0 Performing real mode VBE call Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f00 bx=0x0 cx=0x0 Function supported Call successful VBE version 300 VBE string at 0xc61a9 "VIA K8M800 " VBE/DDC service about to be called Report DDC capabilities Performing real mode VBE call Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f15 bx=0x0 cx=0x0 Function supported Call successful Monitor and video card combination does not support DDC1 transfers Monitor and video card combination supports DDC2 transfers 0 seconds per 128 byte EDID block transfer Screen is not blanked during DDC transfer Reading next EDID block VBE/DDC service about to be called Read EDID Performing real mode VBE call Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f15 bx=0x1 cx=0x0 Function supported Call failed The EDID data should not be trusted as the VBE call failed Error: output block unchanged parse-edid: IO error reading EDID ha...@harel-desktop:~$ ---------- The end of the bug report. And again, the resolution worked perfectly under Drake. I know I am not misremembering that, since when the latest trouble began (Dec 2009) I booted in recovery mode and was able to get into another partitionthat still had Dapper Drake..and sure enough, the screen resolution was perfect. Having installed afresh the 9.10 ubuntu I no long have access to Drake, but under Drake my monitor was understood perfectly by the system..I'm hoping the angels of mercy who get this report can fix this bug..you will have my deep gratitude if you do (and for your efforts even if you don't) Thanks! :-) ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 Date: Tue Jan 5 23:16:21 2010 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" - Release i386 (20091028.5) Package: xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu10 ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-16-generic root=UUID=551898f8-2b92-4ed7-b60e-9085cb234261 ro quiet splash ProcEnviron: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-16.53-generic RelatedPackageVersions: xserver-xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu10 libgl1-mesa-glx 7.6.0-1ubuntu4 libdrm2 2.4.14-1ubuntu1 xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2 xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.12.99+git20090929.7968e1fb-0ubuntu1 SourcePackage: xorg Uname: Linux 2.6.31-16-generic i686 XorgConf: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' XsessionErrors: (gnome-settings-daemon:1569): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error: assertion `src != NULL' failed (gnome-settings-daemon:1569): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error: assertion `src != NULL' failed (nautilus:1625): Eel-CRITICAL **: eel_preferences_get_boolean: assertion `preferences_is_initialized ()' failed (polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:1641): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed (firefox:1859): GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple times dmi.bios.date: 09/26/2005 dmi.bios.vendor: Phoenix Technologies, LTD dmi.bios.version: 6.00 PG dmi.board.name: K8M800-8237 dmi.chassis.type: 3 dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnPhoenixTechnologies,LTD:bvr6.00PG:bd09/26/2005:svn:pn:pvr:rvn:rnK8M800-8237:rvr:cvn:ct3:cvr: fglrx: Not loaded system: distro: Ubuntu architecture: i686kernel: 2.6.31-16-generic ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 -- Screen resolution used to be ok in Ubuntu 6, not in 8.04 and later https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/503674 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
