Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg
Description: Ubuntu 9.10 Release: 9.10 xserver-xorg: Installed: 1:7.4+3ubuntu10 Candidate: 1:7.4+3ubuntu10 Version table: *** 1:7.4+3ubuntu10 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-updates/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 1:7.4+3ubuntu7 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages 1:7.3+10ubuntu10 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages I am running Karmic on my MacBook Pro. Things run very smoothly overall, but I keep having issues with Xorg sucking up all available RAM. A system that should be able to log months of uptime and I'm having to restart (at least X) at least once every other week (this baby has *lots* of RAM). After poking around I noticed that the RAM gets consumed largely after switching on Compositing. Since Compositing is configured to turn off and on when I plug in and unplug the laptop, and when suspending, this can use up over a GB of RAM. This boot, Xorg started off using ~200MB of RAM (first time I checked it). After a switch off and on of Compositing (Alt-Shift-F12 in Kubuntu), Xorg now climbs to ~400MB. Another switch off and on and I was at ~480MB, then 495MB, after another switch I'm at 581MB. If I don't switch off and on Compositing, Xorg RAM usage sits still. Thank you for all your great work, guys.
