Progress.... A2 CD live won't boot, initial boot screen freezes no matter what is tried on the linux boot line.
A1 updated to A2 level won't run any time at all unless "nomodeset" and "vesa" are used. A2 Alternate installed O.K., has been running! (careful! Don't update it, it's running!)
