Same problem, hooked up my ibm think centre s50 to my 37" Panasonic TH- 37PX80EA 16:9 plasma tv. I got 1280x768_60Hz with 8.04lts but with 9.10 I can only choose between 640x480 and 800x600, 800x600 default.
With 8.10 and 9.04 the screen goes black just before login.
