Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Using a new T410 Lenovo Thinkpad I was able to install both Ubuntu and
Xubuntu 10.4 Alpha 2. However, after applying all pending system
updates recommended by the package manager X freezes after I enter my
password to log on. This occurs whether I select a normal Gnome or XFCE
session, an xterm, or an alternate window manager (Awesome or XMonad).
I am able to use CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to another terminal and log into a
session without X. Since I am able to log on without using X, and since
I can reproduce the bug with both GNOME and XFCE I presume this is a bug
in X.

Right now I'm going back and selectively applying updates one by one to
figure out which package upgrade it was that caused this problem.
