Hmm, this sounds awfully familiar. What was the dimensions on the png? There was once a bug where if you loaded a png with dimensions equal to or larger than the screen resolution, it'd trigger an array bounds issue. Does this bug reproduce reliably when loading the png? (Try loading it in firefox too - iirc the bug also triggered there.)
