** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I'm running Ubuntu Karmic on a laptop (Acer Extensa 5220) with X3100 Intel
graphic card.
Booting whit kernel 2.6.31-14 (default for karmic) I have always a complete
system freeze after about 3 second after login.
I tried the option "vesa" on xorg, but i have a black screen on boot: first I
see the logo of Ubuntu (without progress bar), then instead of the logo with
the progress bar, I have a black screen. I can switch to consolle with Alt+F6,
I can see the write "login", but I can't enter any word.
Booting with the old kernel of Jaunty, the 2.6.28, and with "intel" in xorg,
the system will not freeze any more, but is very very slow, but the mouse
pointer doesn't work (maybe incompatibility with new X and kernel)
Booting with the old kernel of Jaunty, the 2.6.28, and with "vesa" in xorg,
the system will not freeze any more, ant it is fast, but the mouse pointer
doesn't work.

Despite from sistem -> aspect-> grafic effects says that compiz was disable
(booting with old kernel 2.6.28), I had to make compiz non-executable:
  "sudo chmod a-x /usr/bin/compiz"
Now , booting with kernel 2.6.31-14 and defaul xorg.conf (without "vesa"),
the system works great.

So, for me, the problem is compiz and driver intel.

Ask me for more information, if needed.

  Bye
