Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Similar to Bug #518201

I recently bought a HP Pavillion DV4 with a Core i3 M330 CPU/GPU. I
originally installed Karmic 9.10 but I had to use the VESA driver to
install and run. When using the xorg-video-intel driver my screen would
go black when GDM starts after bootup. However if I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to a
shell and then Ctrl-Alt-F7 then GDM would appear. I could type in my
username and password but the system would hang after pressing enter.

Then I installed Lucid 10.04 where I also had to use the VESA driver for
the install but both the intel and the vesa drivers would hang the
system after logging in from GDM. Then I found that if I entered a shell
(Ctrl-Alt-F1) from the GDM prompt and restarted GDM with "sudo
/etc/init.d/gdm restart" then I could log in to gnome just fine. The
intel driver seemed to be working fine until I tried playing Nexuiz or
Urban Terror. It seems like OpenGL was very slow and unstable.

I tested mainline kernel (2.6.33-RC7) and the issues still exist.
