fishnuts, you describe multiple bugs in one bug report and that does not
fit into our work flow. I therefore deleted the OpenGL performance part
of your description. You may report this in a separate bug report if you
wish. In order to make the bug report more concise I also removed the
part about Karmic, since we will need to focus on the Lucid issue here.

This sounds like a GPU hang, but I'm not quite sure if it is. If it is,
there should be signs of it in the output of dmesg. The current state of
the intel drivers in the linux kernel is such that it is hard to debug
these issues. There is an experimental patch that will record some
necessary information, but it isn't quite ready yet. One problem that
could lead to freezes has been fixed in the latest libdrm. I have
packaged the Lucid libdrm with this patch in my PPA. You may give that a
try: https://launchpad.net/~gomyhr/+archive/standard. You may also try
the xorg-edgers PPA to see if there are any fixes there that resolves
this problem: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

Please attach:
- output of `dmesg` from after the problem occurs
- output of `lspci -vvnn`
