I managed to get rid of the problem, via a special xrandr command:
xrandr --newmode "1600x1200"  161.00  1600 1712 1880 2160  1200 1203 1207 1245 
-hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA1 1600x1200
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1600x1200 --above LVDS1

Works fine now !
(still not "automatic, but fine...)
