You have been subscribed to a public bug: I mostly notice this bug in Terminal because that's what I use most of the time but I have also seen it in Skype. I think the same bug happens in Firefox and Chrome but because the cursor looks different (and I-beam rather than a solid square) it doesn't cause a major problem. Firefox and Chrome also seem to redraw more often than Terminal which removes the problem from whatever text I have already written.
The problem is that when I am typing, the cursor covers the letters that I type so that all I can see is a row of squares. Occasionally, what stays on the screen is a space rather than a filled-in square but mostly it is filled-in squares. Clicking to another application and then back to Terminal will cause a redraw which draws all characters correctly. Anything else that causes the screen to redraw such as hitting tab twice or hitting enter has the same effect, It's not always the same characters and it's not very consistent. Some commands I type will only have one blacked out character, others may have the entire line blacked out. Using the arrow keys to move the cursor back over the text causes the same problem with the exception that the characters are drawn inverted (black-on-white) or normally (white-on-black) rather than a solid square. A similar effect happens when selecting text with the mouse. Selecting text by dragging and then deselecting by dragging back will leave inverted characters. Once the screen has been redrawn and all text looks fine, selecting with the mouse works as normal but moving the cursor using the arrow keys causes the problem again. The problem only happens very rarely when using the mouse to select text inside vi and I have not managed to cause it with the arrow keys at all but does happen both inside and outside screen sessions. I have screenshots available of the effect I am seeing. I have no idea of what package to file this under because I am seeing the problem in several applications and I haven't found anything to indicate where the problem actually is. I have the non-free Nvidia drivers installed. I don't know if they are related to the problem but it's worth mentioning. I have a laptop with an attached monitor. (Not mirrored.) The problem occurs on both monitors.
