*Fixed* I downloaded and burned a copy of ubuntu desktop daily build (lucid- desktop-i386.iso 28-Feb-2010) and it works as expected. The splash screen works (including plymouth), my monitor doesn't turn off anymore, and I am able to run a live session and or install ubuntu, either from the initial boot menu or from the live desktop.
By the way, I tried to do what was said in response #3 by waiting for the desktop to finish loading then try to get my screen back, but it didn't help. Using Ctrl+Alt+F1 (and F2) then Ctrl+Alt+F7 had no effect on my monitor. My problem must be different from the other user's because I think the user's monitor didn't get shut off, but mine did.
