We're also seeing this problem on a Dell Inspiron 1100, running Karmic with intel video driver version 2.9.1~git-0ubuntu0tormod from xorg- edgers and a 2.6.31-20 kernel. There are no 3D effects enabled (compiz has been completely removed).
