I tested with 2.4.17-0ubuntu2+freezefix~gomyhr1 in lucid and the error message
at boot from comment #10 had disappeared, but I think the GPU hung (I wasn't
there at the moment, but "the computer hung again"). I now seem to have
upgraded past the revision of the ppa and I am on 2.4.18-1ubuntu2 (where I
believe the patch is already in?) and here I definitely get a GPU hang.

and then it fails twice more before it completely locks up.

This "Hangcheck" message has been in lucid every time it hung.

I can't say for certain that I ever triggered it before being in standby
at least once (in lucid).

Since the behaviour in lucid is that X is restarting and then the
computer completely locks up, I can't ssh in to the machine for further
debug info.
