"Apport" is a package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories. The Thinkpad T40 ati video graphics got repetitive crashes while I struggled to do apt-get update and apt-get full-upgrade. It even crashed trying to process the crash report. It finally cleared and did remain up. I have no idea which of the many updates finally worked.
