Hmmmm...it seems that the problem was related to num lock. :\
The thing is, the Eee doesn't have a NumLock LED indicator so I didn't even 
notice that it was only the right side of the keyboard that got messed up.
However, although the bug no longer bugs me personally, it is still valid 
because I should not have seen the behaviour of the keyboard depend on pressing 
caps lock, resuming from suspend, switching to a different keyboard layout etc. 
(which is what threw me off in the first place)
