My problems seem to be fixed for a couple of days, now. I updated my computer about one week ago (1st or 2nd March) and I do not suffer from the "freeze" (boot to black screen) anymore - even if I do not set the "nomodeset"-option in Grub. The visible mark for me was that I boot now with the linux (2.6.32-15)-kernel - but the change could be due to other updates which came in, at the same time.
My Lucid the boot experience was rather shaky during the last weeks. (Sometimes, unpredictably boot went fine without "nomodeset", but most of the times I had to use the "nomodeset"-option.) Therefore, I propose to keep this bug open for another couple of days - I will close the bug in a few days, if the issue does not come back.
