The problem has appeared to go away for me. About two weeks after filing the report, I wiped my machine and re-installed Ubuntu 9.10 with what I believe was all the packages I had previously added, except for all those that use KDE. Whatever the reason, I have not had the problem since the re-install. I will file a new bug if it re-emerges.
