It's quite possible that in scenarios 1 & 3 you're running into a
manifestation of bug #535640.  There is also a new 2.6.32-17 kernel in
Lucid that will soon become the default, and that has some drm fixes.

It seems like, apart from the lid-close problem, disabling the
ForcePipeA quirk makes things significantly better at least!
