That shouldn't be necessary. Just the knowledge that the -nv driver can drive your laptop monitor should be useful.
The nouveau devs might ask for an mmiotrace of the nvidia binary driver bringing up the external monitor. I'll look at putting instructions on the Ubuntu wiki about how to take a trace soon; it requires the 2.6.32-17 kernel. Your work here is done!
