In order to make it the default setting, I added the "i915..." option to this line in /boot/grub/menu.lst kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-16-generic root=UUID=958089fb-1b14-440d-865b-6188671382e0 ro splash quiet i915.modeset=0
