What are the error messages you see every 2 seconds? Can you paste them in?
You mention a big white box, can you attach a photograph of the screen as an example (just in case there is some additional clues). Also try turning off Desktop Effects and see if that affects the issue - white windows suggest a rendering issue. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati Im in lucid Beta 1. I manage to get to the Desktop without problems. I can explore the menus from the panel and unfold the calendar, but when I try to open the first window, ANY window, I get a big white box and clicking doesnt work anymore, even though I can move the mouse for a while. I can also go back to the tty, even thought I keep getting messages of error every 2 seconds which makes it quite annoying... + + [ 308.988101] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence(ecd70560:0x00000314) 504ms timeout going to reset GPU + [ 308.988313] [drm] GPU reset succeed (RBBM_STATUS=0x00000140) + [ 308.988323] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence(ecd70560:0x00000314) 512ms timeout + [ 308.988330] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* last signaled fence(0x00000314) + [ 311.524099] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence(ecd70f40:0x00000317) 508ms timeout going to reset GPU + [ 311.524310] [drm] GPU reset succeed (RBBM_STATUS=0x00000140) + [ 311.524319] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence(ecd70f40:0x00000317) 516ms timeout + [ 311.524325] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* last signaled fence(0x00000317) + [ 314.252061] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence(ecd70020:0x0000031A) 508ms timeout going to reset GPU + [ 314.254962] [drm] GPU reset succeed (RBBM_STATUS=0x00000140) + [ 314.254966] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence(ecd70020:0x0000031A) 516ms timeout + [ 314.257928] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* last signaled fence(0x0000031A) + ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 Date: Wed Mar 31 17:40:00 2010 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 DkmsStatus: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" - Release i386 (20091028.5) Lsusb: - Bus 003 Device 002: ID 046d:c03e Logitech, Inc.
