Ok, I have installed Ubuntu kernel "2.6.34-020634rc1-generic #020634rc1 SMP Tue Mar 9 10:10:20 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux", and it has now been running 15 hours without the bug appearing. Looks like it is fixed. My grateful thanks go to all involved.
