You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: plymouth
When plymouth is installed and running on my computer (with a NVIDIA GTX 260) the Ubuntu splash displays properly but my displays always start at 1440x900 - not the 1680x1050 intended, even if I forcefully specify it in xorg.conf. Running: sudo apt-get purge ^plymouth-theme-.*\$ to remove all plymouth themes, hence leaving the computer with no splash to run, fixes the problem, so I think that is the cause.
