There is a monitors.xml file that gnome uses to set stuff up, that might
be worth removing.  Other files named ~/.x* could be worth study.  Also
look in `env` for settings that could result in X changes (e.g.
DISPLAY).  There is also a ~/.drirc which controls your 3D settings
(driconf edits this file)
