This is indeed a freeze, not a crash.  It's a weird situation where you
get a backtrace so it *looks* like a crash, but the crash is a secondary
effect that is caused by the system being frozen, if that makes sense.

To answer your earlier question, yes with freeze bugs you do need GPU
dumps in order to make a proper defect report.
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state is needed as well - refer to
the freeze troubleshooting docs for full directions.
