Thanks for all the help, Bryce. No desktop effects enabled, AFAIK, and no 3D graphics either (I mostly live in Emacs and Firefox).
FWIW, I was using an external monitor setup then (mirrored screens, w/ laptop screen and one external screen). Now I'm using just the laptop screen, after rebooting. So far, the bug has not come back.
