Hrm, bumping all the way down to -vesa seems rather extreme, but if
that's what it takes to get it working...  Can others confirm whether
going with vesa seems like the best approach?

With vesa, that means no 3D acceleration, no kms, and probably no
resolutions other than the plain VGA modes (1024x768, etc.)
