I experience exactly the same on Ubuntu 9.10 with the Core i3 540 processor on the P7H55-M PRO motherboard -- all are new, recently bought parts.
I can confirm that it looks so that only the interface things freeze. One time such a freeze happened during a copying of a large amount of files. Despite I wasn't able to get reaction from my keyboard (not even from the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace or Ctrl+Alt+Del), mouse or anything, I saw that the HD activity led continues to flick just like during the copying. After reboot I found that all the files were copied successfully so I think the base parts of the system continue to work correctly.
