On my legacy hardware (Asus S1300N from 2003) with Lucid fully updated, the graphical login screen won't show without KMS.
Applying option 3 solves it : echo options i915 modeset=1 | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf If I then click on my login entry, Xorg crashes immediately berore I can enter my password. The screen flickers several times then I am informed that Ubuntu works in lower graphics mode.
